Reverend Doctor Avery Jerome Danage, Sr.
The Reverend Doctor Avery Jerome Danage is the son of the Elaine and Grover Danage and is a first generation preacher in his family. Dr. Danage is the proud pastor of the historic Providence United Church of Christ in Chesapeake, Virginia, the oldest African-American congregation in the Southern Conference of the United Churches of Christ. He is the 17th pastor in the church’s 163-year history.
Dr. Danage is a native of Warren, Ohio and a graduate of Warren Western Reserve High School. Called to the gospel ministry in 1993, he was licensed to preach the Gospel under the leadership of Pastor Alton Merrell of New Jerusalem Fellowship Church in Warren, Ohio.
An avid sports fan (Pittsburgh Steelers), Dr. Danage served as the Campus Pastor for the Coalition for Christian Outreach at Kent State University, where he co-founded a Multi-Racial Campus ministry and served as the team Pastor for the Kent State University Football team. During this time, he also joined the ministry of Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Akron, Ohio where he served under the leadership of Pastor Jeffrey Dennis, specializing in Pastoral administration, church leadership and ministry development.
Having served faithfully, he accepted the call to South Euclid United Church of Christ as Youth Minister alongside Pastor Courtney-Clayton Jenkins. Under his leadership the Youth Ministry grew numerically and spiritually. After serving SEUCC faithfully for three years, Dr. Danage accepted a call to serve at the Kent United Church of Christ as Associate Pastor of family and youth.
Dr. Danage is the product of Warren City Schools and a proud graduate of Kent State University with an Associates and Bachelors degrees in criminal justice, a Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry in Transformational Leadership from Ashland Theological Seminary in Ashland, Ohio.
Dr. Danage and his wife Semone of 27 years have 4 adult children, Avery Jr, Ambyr, Jessica and Arielle, and two grandchildren Corrine Noelle and Tatum James.
